This year we stayed in town for the holiday. We haven't seen the fireworks in our hometown since the first year we moved out here about 7 years ago. It was a bit lame. At least the festival was AND you had to pay $5 to get in. The setting for the fireworks show is beautiful since they fire them over the delta. Of course we went late and every spot on the lawns were overtaken by families who had excellent game plans. All we had was a blanket that we spread out on the dirt by the train tracks. It was crappy but at least the fireworks show was decent.

I decided since we weren't going anywhere that we should try it again. Last night we were better prepared: GET THERE EARLY and BRING CHAIRS! By 7pm we were downtown, bought dinner at the festival, and staked out a spot. Of course all the lawn areas were spoken for so we headed toward the fishing pier that still had enough room. We were able to get an excellent spot before it got crowded. 2 more hours to wait. Fortunately I brought my knitting to keep me busy while we people watched. Watching the sunset was beautiful. One stupid thing I forgot...a blanket and/or a sweater. It was warm out earlier and breezy. Didn't think the wind would pick up once the sun went down.

At exactly 9:30pm the fireworks show started. It was a very nice display. It was cool how the fireworks barge moved slowly down the delta. Eventually the fireworks were going off above our heads. Overall, it was a pleasant holiday. The festival still seemed a little lame from what I could tell but at least the event is free now. Maybe next time going with a group would be fun.
