Mom's Birthday Luck

My Mom's birthday dinner started off sketchy last night. Amy suggested we have dinner at a fundraiser crab feed for her niece's little league. My mom was fine with it. At $40 per ticket we were getting a ton of crab and tri-tip from Kinder's BBQ. YUM. We get there and find out we don't have assigned seats with the niece's team. We were given a table number, looked all over for it, but it didn't exist. We twiddled our thumbs while we waited for the staff to figure out what to do with us. They gave us a table wayyyy in the back of the hall. At least there was a spot for us. The lady helping us out gave us our first round of drinks for free. Yup...drinks were being sold for the fundraiser. We were wondering why people were bringing in their own coolers. They knew better to bring their own beverages. Some even bought butter warmers for their table. Fortunately we had cash on hand for more drinks. A young couple that were also misplaced sat next us and didn't know they needed cash for drinks either. We gave a few bucks to help them out.

Our food servers turned out to be the boys from the little league. A particular team is assigned a table and they had to work for tips to raise money for their team. The kitchen people were not giving us enough food for our table and we had to keep sending the boys back for more. One of the boys was really great getting us what we needed and kept asking us how we were doing. We wanted to reward him more than the others by giving him cash to pocket. The other boys were clueless and didn't deserve tips. I know...harsh, right? No. We spent way more than we thought we would at this little fundraiser. At least the crab tasted really fresh. The tri-tip was overcooked and disappointing. Normally Kinders does a way better job than that.

We all bought raffle tickets for some prizes, one of which was an iPod shuffle basket with various gift cards. Most of our tickets went to that. My mom bought $6 worth of tickets for some game called 50/50. No one really knew what this 50/50 game was about. There was also a silent auction going on. Prizes included a signed guitar by Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, a picture of Mr. and Mrs. JFK, and the rest were mostly sports memorabilia. My dad bid for the JFK pic. Bid started at $125. I know. WTF? He seemed to want it bad because he kept checking to see the bid list. A few people outbid him. He was satisfied by taking a photo of the picture with his camera.

Right after we finished dinner my mom bought more raffle tickets. We told her to put it all in for the iPod prize. One of her tickets was the winning number. The "50/50" prize was cash. Whatever money was made for this raffle was split between the little league and the raffle winner. We had the winning ticket and my brother ran up to go get the money. We won $310. It all went to mom of course. Cool, huh? Amy was glad things turned out the way it did. She said she felt bad for my mom spending her birthday at a crack ass crab feed. Mom had nothing to complain about when she made out like a bandit with almost $400 in prizes.
